THE KID NEXT TO ME is a physical theatre duet created and performed by real-life father and son Mai and Leo Rojas. Their relationship becomes the frame for a deeper metaphor: an adult confronting the pain inherited across generations and meeting the child he once was. A journey through memory, acceptance and healing, where the inner child is no longer hidden, but finally seen and embraced.

The company, Los Escultores del Aire, aside from their creative work, also uses Mime and Physical theatre as a pedagogical tool. During this year’s festival we invite children and families to put what they see into practice with a combination of show, talk and workshop. The piece The Kid Next to Me is followed by a short introduction to physical theatre, where you will meet a couple of basic concepts like awareness of the body and physically expressing emotion, through different creative and playful exercises. You will also be able to discuss the major themes of the piece together with the performing artists.

The performance is accessible to younger audiences, while its emotional and metaphorical layers may resonate more deeply with teenagers and adults.

The performance The Kid Next to Me, without the workshops, will also be presented as part of GBG Mime Explosion.

THE KID NEXT TO ME är en fysisk teater-duett skapad och framförd av far och son, Mai och Leo Rojas. Deras relation blir i sig en metafor där den vuxna, i konfrontation med en smärta som ärvts över generationer, möter det barn han en gång var. En resa genom minne, acceptans och helande, där det inre barnet inte längre är undanträngt, utan äntligen får synas och omfamnas.

Utöver sitt kreativa arbete använder Los Escultores del Aire även mim och fysisk teater som ett pedagogiskt verktyg. Under årets festival bjuder vi in ​​barn och familjer att själva prova på det de ser på scen i en kombination av föreställning, samtal och workshop. Stycket “The Kid Next to Me” följs av en kort introduktion till fysisk teater, där vi genom olika kreativa och lekfulla övningar arbetar med ett några grundläggande begrepp som kroppslig medvetenhet och hur man fysiskt kan uttrycka känslor. Du kommer också att kunna diskutera styckets huvudteman tillsammans med artisterna.

Mai Rojas is a Costa Rican-born, Barcelona-based theatre creator, performer, director and pedagogue specialising in physical theatre and corporeal mime. He trained at Madrid’s RESAD and at the International School of Corporeal Mime in London, and has developed an international career spanning more than two decades.

He is co-founder and artistic director of Los Escultores del Aire, a physical theatre company founded in 2014 whose productions have toured across Europe and the Americas and received numerous awards. His professional experience also includes collaborations with internationally recognised companies and institutions such as Cirque du Soleil.

Rojas’ artistic work combines physical precision, visual dramaturgy and contemporary mime, exploring the body as a vehicle for narrative, emotion and poetic transformation. Alongside his work as a creator and performer, he has developed an extensive pedagogical practice focused on connecting technique, repertoire and creation, helping performers transform movement into a precise, personal and expressive stage language.
